What Do Baby Roaches Look Like

Reproduction of Roaches

There are various stages of development for cockroaches. The adult female cockroaches lay eggs and the number of eggs depends on the species of the cockroach. A German adult cockroach lays between 30 and 40 eggs while an American cockroach lays between 14 and 16 eggs.

Depending on the species of cockroach, some will lay eggs behind cabinets or on furniture. While others lay them on a surface. German cockroaches actually carry the eggs in the body for 3 weeks and they stay there until it is time to hatch.

Identifying Baby Roaches

American Cockroach

This one is one-quarter in length and start life a black-brown color but as their exoskeletons start to shed and they grow, they turn to a reddish-brown color. In addition, the baby American cockroach has six legs that are spiny, a long antennae and hard-shelled body that is divided into three sections. The baby also does not have wings like the adults. As they grow into adults, they have a marking on their head that looks like a halo.

While on the other hand, the baby German cockroach nymphs are about one-eighth of an inch and dark brown in color. A flat body that has a hard shell, six legs that are spiny, and a separate head and segments across the body make up this pest. Additionally, it has two long antennae that are thin and no wings. The baby German roach also molts several times and the color of the shell gets darker.

Brown Banded Cockroach

One-eighth of an inch, light brown bands behind their heads and are brown. The body is oblong and has six legs that are spiny and antennae. They also have a hard shell. Dark in colors like the other types of cockroaches and two bands that go across the stomach.

Oriental Cockroach 

One-quarter inch in length, reddish brown, and change to a black color as they grow into adults. They don’t have wings but do have bands that are darker in color. The baby oriental cockroach is about the size of a piece of rice before the first molt occurs.
