The most common house pests in Georgia are ants, cockroaches, termites, spiders, rodents, and fall invaders like stink bugs.
Each has a season when you are most likely to see it, and a few stay active all year. At All South Pest Control, we treat homes across Metro South Georgia and the Atlanta area. This guide shows what each one looks like, when it is most active in Georgia, and when a sighting means it is time to call a pro.
What Are Common House Pests?
House pests are the insects, spiders, and rodents that get into homes. Some only annoy you. Others damage wood, spoil food, or affect your health. “Bug” is a loose word, so a pest can be an insect, a spider, or a mouse.
| Risk | Examples | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Nuisance | Stink bugs, lady beetles, silverfish | Annoying, but no structural harm |
| Damage | Termites, carpenter ants, rodents | Can harm wood, wiring, and insulation |
| Health | Cockroaches, rodents, ticks, mosquitoes | Can spread germs or trigger reactions |
Georgia’s warm, humid climate keeps many pests active for most of the year, but the seasons still change what you see. Our post on what to expect from Georgia seasonal pest control covers year-round plans. This guide focuses on telling the pests apart.

Common House Pests by Season in Georgia
Use this calendar as a guide. It draws on UGA Extension’s household pest guidance and common Georgia pest patterns.
| Season | Pests most likely to show up |
|---|---|
| Spring | Termite swarmers, ants, carpenter bees, mosquitoes |
| Summer | Ants, cockroaches, mosquitoes, stinging insects |
| Fall | Stink bugs, kudzu bugs, lady beetles, spiders, rodents |
| Winter | Rodents, cockroaches, Argentine ants |
Some pests ignore the calendar. Cockroaches and rodents can stay active indoors all year. UGA also notes that termite swarmers are most often seen in spring but can appear at any time of year.
Ants
Ants are the most common trail you will see in a Georgia kitchen. Here is how to read the signs:
- Look for trails. Ants follow a scent line from the nest to food, often along baseboards, counters, and window sills.
- Check size and color. Small black or brown ants are common indoors. Large black ants near damp wood may be carpenter ants.
- Watch the season. UGA says Argentine ant trails are most visible in summer, and Argentine ants may move indoors in winter.
- Skip the spray on the trail. Spraying can scatter a colony. A pro can find the nest.

Cockroaches and “Palmetto Bugs”
In Georgia, “palmetto bug” usually means the American cockroach. It is a large, reddish-brown roach. Two kinds cause most of the problems:
- American cockroach. Often found near drains, basements, and damp areas.
- German cockroach. Small and tan, with two dark stripes behind the head. It lives in kitchens and baths and stays active indoors year-round.
Roaches follow food, water, and warmth. Our guides on what cockroaches eat and common roach entry points in an Atlanta house show how they get in. German roaches are hard to clear without help, which is why we offer German roach treatment.

Termites
Termites are a damaging pest, not just a nuisance. Winged swarmers are the sign most people see. Look for these clues:
- Swarmers or shed wings near windows and doors
- Mud tubes on foundation walls or in crawl spaces
- Soft or hollow-sounding wood
Flying ants and swarming termites look alike at a glance. Termites have straight antennae and a thick waist. Winged ants have bent antennae and a pinched waist. Inside & Out Pest Services in Florida compares the two in carpenter ants vs. termites.
UGA says homeowners should not try to treat an existing termite infestation themselves. Our termite inspection is a good first step.
Spiders and Rodents
Most house spiders are harmless. The two to watch for in Georgia are the brown recluse, which is tan with a violin-shaped mark, and the black widow, which is glossy black with a red hourglass. They hide in garages, sheds, and boxes. Wear gloves when you move stored items.
Rodents leave clearer clues:
- Droppings along walls, in cabinets, or in the garage
- Gnaw marks on boxes, wires, or food packaging
- Scratching in walls or ceilings at night
Rodents move indoors more as the weather cools. The EPA recommends closing off entryways and hiding places, such as caulking cracks and crevices. If you suspect mice or rats, schedule a rodent inspection.
Fall Invaders
Stink bugs, kudzu bugs, and multicolored Asian lady beetles are nuisance pests. They do not damage your home, but they look for warm places to spend the winter. UGA says lady beetles search for overwintering sites in fall, and kudzu bugs move toward buildings in October and November.
UGA advises sealing gaps and treating entry points early, by mid-September. If they are already inside, vacuum them up instead of crushing them. Read how to get rid of a stink bug without the smell.
Other Common Pests to Know
- Silverfish and camel crickets. They like damp basements, bathrooms, and crawl spaces.
- Mosquitoes. They breed in standing water in warm weather. See how to survive mosquitoes in Georgia and our mosquito control.
- Fleas and ticks. They come in on pets and wildlife. We offer flea and tick control.
- Carpenter bees. UGA says they chew holes in wood from March to May.
How to Keep Common House Pests Out
The EPA says prevention is the most effective way to control pests that can spread disease. These steps help with almost every pest on this list:
- Seal gaps. Caulk cracks around cabinets, baseboards, pipes, and doors.
- Secure food. Seal food and scraps tightly, take out the trash often, and do not leave pet food out overnight.
- Fix moisture. Leaks draw roaches, silverfish, and carpenter ants. PI Home Inspection in Illinois explains the risks of ignoring water damage on the ceiling.
- Trim back plants. Keep branches and shrubs from touching the house.
- Prepare in September. Seal entry points before fall invaders and rodents move in.
What to Do When You Spot a Pest
A quick, calm response makes identification easier:
- Note where and when. Write down the room, the time of day, and the season.
- Take a clear photo. Place a coin or ruler next to it for size.
- Do not spray right away. Spraying can scatter ants and roaches and hide clues.
- Remove the drawer. Wipe spills, close food containers, and dry damp spots.
- Ask for an ID. A pro can tell you what it is and whether it needs treatment.
